Face masks for the family.  Using pattern from Frontline Masks.
Hand piecing EPP hexis. Long term project.

Beading more stitch markers, paw prints and badgers.

In the Garden:  Spring cleanup done.  First round of weeds pulled, but it's like Pinky and the Brain.  Ordered new perennials from High Country Gardens that should come this week.  Fill in with plants from Harding Nursery.  Harvested rhubarb twice already.

In the Beeyard - I think I caught a swarm???  Girls are building comb and making honey, but there is no brood, larvae, eggs, or queen sighting.  No clue.  They aren't robbing it out, it was empty.  Now there's honey.  So confused!

Off Topic:  Tired of this pandemic crap.
Watching/Listening: Itchy Boots about a woman riding an adventure bike around the world.  Soooooo, Brian bought a new bike!  It's a Honda Africa Twin DCT and it's pretty neat.  Off-road here we come!

I am DaniGirlCO on Instagram, Periscope and Ravelry.  Come and follow along.
Here are the show notes for Episode 35:

On the Needles:
Knitting Projects -
FO's:
Campside shawl by Alicia Plummer. Using Classic Elite Yarns Soft Linen in a beautiful blue color.  Finished the edging in a blue/grey.  Still need to block.

WIPs:
Agleam by Lisa Mutch.  Absolutely love it.  Using Knitting Fever KFI Silk Sport that I got on sale at LYS, not normally my colors but it's growing on me.  Extending the pattern so I can use all the yarn.

Vanilla socks for Christmas 2017.  I've never knit socks so quickly before.  Using Zitron Unisono for toes/heels/cuffs and knit them TAAT to get equal length out of the Gynx Yarns sock in Ornaments color way that I actually bought in 2014.  Love it!

Stalking:  Cardigans for kids (A), the Little Rhun, My Honey, to make with a purple cotton yarn I have.  Very large urge to cast on another sweater for me though.

Acquisitions -  Went birthday shopping on Small Business Saturday and I got myself a sweater quantity!  Malabrigo Rios in Lettuce, 1900 yds, all they had.  And maybe some more.  Gifted a beautiful romney yarn from a knit group friend.

Spinning Projects - n/a

Under the Needle:
Sewing Projects - wanting to do some sewing with my nieces over Christmas.  Putting together a little sewing kit, some easy ornaments for them to stitch, and maybe start a doll's blanket?  I've been looking up ideas for sewing with children, and it talks about motor skills and coordination a lot, but not so much the attention span thing.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

In the Garden: n/a

In the Beeyard - Need to order my bees for next spring.  Don't want to rely on catching an early swarm.  Get on it already!  PPBA also offers packages for sale.

Off Topic:  Doing another dinner out with the ladies tomorrow.   I have my Christmas card for the flat swap, just need to gather the other stuff so I can put in mail.  Working around my depression.
Watching:  All the podcasts doing Vlogmas!  Thought about doing it too, but we'll be traveling and it looks like a lot of work!  Am having a blast watching everyone open their Advent calendars, especially the yarny ones.  Broncos are not having a good season, but I'm still cheering them on.

Thanks for watching!

Episode 26: Celtic Cables are Done!

Welcome viewers!
I am DaniGirlCO on Instagram, Periscope and Ravelry.
Here are the show notes for Episode 26:
On the Needles:
Knitting Projects -
FO's: Celtic Myths shawl by Asita Krebs, need to clear off the guest bed so I can block it.

WIPs:
Linum Tee by Bristol Ivy, using Classic Elite Bella Lino yarn, sz 3 needles.  I connected the shoulders using a 3 needle bind off (my first), need arm bands and it's done.
Blueberry waffle socks out of Opal in summer colors because I needed another pair to tote around.

Stalking - Nothing, trying to stay faithful to current knitting. Although the Transverse Cardigan in my queue will be moving into projects soon.  Looking for Berroco pattern book #294 Origami.  It has the Kiama pattern in it that I would love to make out of handspan, but can't purchase a digital copy.  From 2010 so it's not in stores anymore.

Acquisitions - fabrics

Spinning Projects -
none, I'm in a slump

Under the Needle:
Sewing Projects -
Mystery Block of the Month put together with sashing/cornerstones.  Need to figure out a border. I'm now addicted to EPP hexis, slowly growing larger. Not sure what I'll do with it.  All of these are using 1800's reproduction fabrics.
Cousins wedding quilt is back from the long-armer, now I "just" need to bind it.  Again, it's huge and unwieldy.

In the Garden: Need to start fall clean up, pulling weeds, mint (never-ending), etc.

In the Beeyard -
Will start again in the spring with a swarm.  First time since 2012 I haven't gone into winter with a hive.

Off Topic:
Watching: Listening - Down Cellar Studio with Boston Jen
Are you playing in any KALs?  What are they?  I'm participating in the Down Cellar Studio podcast Pigskin Party 2016 KAL.  If you're not a member of the group already and want to play along, let me know because I can get points for "drafting" somebody.  I normally watch some of the games anyway, but this year I'm playing in some fantasy football leagues so NFL Redzone is my friend.
Took a motorcycle trip over the 17th to Snowmass, CO.  Four passes in two days, leaves changing, balloon glow and a free concert.  It was really good, and I didn't have to push myself too hard to be social.  Still took time to recuperate after though.
Received a lovely package from Roseanna of Meli Melo Arts with some stitch markers.  Take a look at her Etsy shop.

In the Beeyard -
Looks like one of the swarms I caught was good.  I got the queen!  They've been coming and robbing out the frames left from the honey extraction.  REALLY need to add another honey super to them ASAP.

Celtic Myths shawl, doing the fingering weight pattern, finally on the border!  going to run out of yarn, had to order another skein.  Hope the color blends into the border well enough.  This is going to be an expensive shawl.

Stalking - things for the Colors of the Season KAL, swatching for the Linum tee,

Acquisitions -

Spinning Projects -
none

Under the Needle:
Sewing Projects -
Nicole's wedding quilt, some new blocks, trying to get my rear in gear already.

In the Garden: we had yet another hail storm, and my rhubarb is still recovering.  Perennials are blooming and growing.  Hops are about 7-8 ft tall now.

In the Beeyard - Extraction party went great, if messy.  Everything got sticky.  Hubby used it as excuse to buy a power washer.  Rented extractor from the Pikes Peak Beekeeper's Association.

I've gone out on two swarm calls, but I only managed to get one, and not sure if I got the queen at that.  Installed in a hive.  Checked them yesterday and they were still there but didn't see any brood or eggs.  Not enough population to make it worthwhile to requeen.
Also did a hive extraction for a lady with bees in her house.

In the Beeyard - And the bees are . . . one of the two hives has died out.  Low populations probably couldn't keep brood warm?  Saw queen in the second hive, but also several swarm/supercedure cells.  They haven't swarmed yet, but . . . I reversed the hive boxes (top to bottom) so we'll see if that helps.  Suffered a bit of heat exhaustion doing hive inspection, so it's a good thing Jason and Sarah were there.  Jason ended up hauling everything out that needed it.  Thanks Jason and Sarah!

They're Alive! I'm Alive!

Yes, I'm a bad blogger.  Yes, I've been busy.  Plus I was hoping to post some pictures with these updates, and that just isn't going to happen yet.  Here's some drafts I recorded earlier this summer . . .

June 2014
Sarah and Jason helped Mr. HPL and I do hive checks last weekend.  After the incident with Queen Elena's hive, I'd lost a bit of confidence.  On went the gloves and veil.

Overall, it was pretty good news.  There was capped brood in both Queen Elena's and Queen Fiona's colonies.  We spotted both the queens, and there was nectar and pollen in both hives.  Looks like the direct release of the queens didn't have any issues.  Yeah!

The one spot of bad news was with the swarm hive, Queen Dulce.  We saw bees bringing in pollen, but no brood, and didn't spot the queen.  She's had plenty of time to be laying, so my worry is that they didn't get the queen when they captured the swarm.  One possibility is that it was a secondary swarm with a virgin queen, and she's needed time to be mated before she starts laying.  However, we didn't spot any eggs or larvae either.  Another possibility is that the queen was injured during the swarm capture and install.  In this case they would try to make a new queen.  There were a few queen cups, which aren't unusual, but they were all empty.  Again, they need the queen to lay eggs in order to make a new queen.  I'm stumped.  I'll give them this week, but if I don't find any brood this weekend I'll have to take action.  Not sure what that will be yet . . .

I still need to check the hive I placed in Rustic Hills, but I've got a good feeling about that.  Stay tuned.

Bees 10, Me 0

The weekend before last I was going into the hives to do the first checks of the season, when I got a face full of bees.  I was being overconfident, not wearing any gear, didn't light my smoker, and it was overcast.  I knew better.

Well, the hive with Queen Elena was a little hot.  I'd pulled maybe two frames when I got stung right on the nose.  After that all I saw was bees headed straight for my face.  What did I do?  I dropped the frame and ran away, of course.  I pulled my shirt over my head and tried to keep the bees away from my face.

Mr. HPL, who was suited up, behaved like a rock star.  He calmly replaced the frame, closed up the hive, and came to help me get rid of the bees around my head.  ROCK STAR.

The final count was around 8-10 stings.  They got my nose, chin, ear, nape x 3, and arm.  The bees totally won that round.  Somedays being a beekeeper is hard.

Honey Bees 3.0

This is the start of my third year as a beekeeper. Year One was about Learning and Firsts and getting comfortable with the bees. Year Two was about disappointment and confusion and learning even more, while I watched two separate hives dwindle and die. Year Three is going to be the Year of Survival. I am determined to have at least one colony survive into next spring, and in order to stack the odds in my favor I went a little overboard. I purchased 3 packages of Italians. That’s right. THREE. They came in this Monday. I picked them up, setup my equipment, and got everything ready. Then, while I was installing them, I got a call from the swarm coordinator with the PPBA saying that I was next on the swarm list and they had one for me if I was still interested. Umm, yes! In case you aren’t counting, that makes FOUR colonies of bees for me now. So in three years I’ve gone from none to one to none to one to none to four!

While I’m excited about all these hives, I had to find a place to put them. I’m making a tough decision and deciding not to put any bees out at Dick’s place again. While it was a nice spot, and Dick was great about us doing inspections, it was just too far of a drive. So no bees at Dick’s place. Instead, I went across the street to Homestake Nursery and spoke with the manager. They were very amenable to me keeping some bees at the back of the property in exchange for some honey. So I have the swarm (Queen Dulce) and two of the packages (Queens Elena and Fiona) installed at Homestake Nursery. While I’m concerned about the bees having enough resources with three hives in one location, it will make supplemental feeding easy, if necessary.
Swarm installed in hive, using improvised bottom and top cover (from my beevac)
The final package (Queen Gwendolyn) I installed at a very nice couples place. Judy and Arney called last year about me moving their hive because they couldn’t take care of it anymore. So I moved their hive to my place, and they ended up dying anyway. My husband calls me The Queen Killer. Not this year! I called Judy this week and asked if they’d like to have a hive in their yard again, but I’d take care of it for them and do all the work. They really liked the idea, and I like all the mature blooming things in their neighborhood. Plus, it’s not that far from me.

There is a reason behind me wanting multiple hives, and yes, I should have listened and done two the first year. With more than one hive, I am able to make comparisons to watch for really strong or weak hives. I have the resources to pull frames of brood from one hive and introduce to another if necessary, like if a hive goes queenless and I need them to make a new queen. This might have saved our hive last year.
Two packages after installing in hives
A few comments about installing the packages; it was so easy this year! It took Sarah and I such a long time to do the install our first year, they wouldn’t come out of the box for anything. This year, I did the installations by myself, and it took no time at all. I removed two frames, pulled the feed jar out, removed the queen cage and sat it to the side, then dumped the bees in with only a few shakes. Then I gently replaced the frames. There wasn’t any candy in the queen cage, just the cork, and I didn’t have any marshmallows with me, so I took a chance and did a direct release into the hive. I figured the bees had already been with their queens for a few days, and they weren’t attacking the queen cage, so I gambled on them not wanting to kill her. Also, with frames already having comb on them, I’m hoping she starts laying immediately. That will make the bees happy, too. And keep them from absconding. In all cases, she walked right out of the cage and into the hive. Keeping my fingers crossed that I find some eggs and maybe even larva when I check on them Saturday.
